Treats or Trick
It is a crisp Halloween evening, and a very special group of furry and feathered friends is ready for a neighbourhood adventure. Marlow, Willow, and Georgina the cats have teamed up with Bert the budgie, Hettie the hedgehog, and Oswald the rabbit for a thrilling night of trick-or-treating. Their bags are ready, but their festive spirits hit a roadblock when they knock on the door of Number 10. Grumpy Mr. Barlow absolutely refuses to hand out any treats!
Not ready to give up, the clever animal crew comes up with a plan. One by one, they take turns playfully describing the wild, messy, and spooky tricks they could play on the Barlow household if they aren't given any sweets.
As the animals spin their tall tales, Mr. Barlow starts to picture exactly how his wife, Mrs. Barlow, would react to each prank. The story invites young readers to explore a wide range of feelings as Mr. Barlow imagines his wife going through a rollercoaster of emotions—becoming sad, frightened, angry, cross, shocked, and horrified. Realizing he doesn't want his wife to actually experience any of those upsetting feelings, Mr. Barlow quickly changes his mind and happily hands over the Halloween treats.
To keep things kind and friendly, Marlow steps up to reassure the couple, explaining that the animal friends were only using their imaginations and would never actually play those tricks. This charming tale perfectly balances Halloween fun with a valuable educational lesson, helping children identify big emotions and understand how our actions can make others feel.
